Possible fix for leaking Big Game center hatches

A lot of folks who have installed the after-market center hatch on their OK Big Game (and some of the folks who had it installed from the factory) have experienced a problem with leakage.  This has been an annoyance for me since the spring, but became a much bigger one this summer as I have started to use the boat more in the salt.  A quart of saltwater sloshing around amongst your spare clothes, lunch, etc... is not good.  I had hoped it was just leaking from a bad seal of the hatch frame against the kayak, so I tried sealing it with silicone a few months back.  Didn't work.

Last weekend, I parked my Big Game in the yard, filled up the interior with water from the garden hose, then rolled it over to see where it leaked.  I got a little trickle here and there from rivets, rod holders, etc..., and a big gusher from the right side of the center hatch.  Closer inspection showed that the slam latch thing was sealing it in the front, the sides did not have enough tension on them to seat against the gasket. 

My experimental solution is pretty simple.  I had some rubber window gasket material in my garage from a rebuild I did of a travel trailer.  This stuff is shaped like the letter "M" with peel and stuck adhesive on the flat part at the base.  I first split the window gasket in half, then opened up the hatch and pulled out the factory rubber seal.  I then inserted the window gasket into the groove it came from, using a plastic putty knife to squeeze it in and make sure it was seated properly.

My hatch now requires some pressure to seal, and I can clearly see the outline of the hard plastic lid on the gasket material when I open it.  Keep your fingers cross it solves the leak.  If it does I'll try to post a tutorial with photos.
