Ok so I have been lookin at dr's again and saw that both scotty and connon offer a gamble mount for their riggers and was wondering if this would be a good idea or bad idea for a yak... cause to me in my limited knowledge anyway it might be ok as long as you don't use to big of a weight but I could be wrong... still haven't decided if I want to try to use a rigger yet or not but it doesn't hurt to ask questions right.

I saw a youtube video from a couple years back with a Gimbal Mounted Scotty Downrigger on a kayak - in the rear right rod holder.  Looked like the crank handle was ~12" above the kayak - almost even with the seat back, and the boom was about 24" long.  Didn't look too robust in my opinion.  I'm looking for DR mounting options too - mostly think it would be best to have the spool in front of me.  Cranking a downrigger behind me or twisting to do so seems like a good way to injure my shoulder or back...or tip over!  Some really good DR threads are posted on NWKA, look them up in search.

Perhaps it depends on the boat and one's physical dimensions (I'm a small guy).  On my Revo13 I have the DR behind the seat, and will turn side-saddle to crank it up.  I've also rigged a line so I can release the brake while facing forward and pedaling.

I put it behind me because I am always considering how I would re-enter the boat and I didn't want to clutter up the cockpit gunwales with anything more than a rod holder and sonar.
