Hey, people.  I'm used to some pretty challenging situations, surf, and circumstances, but I get a chance to spend some time in Maui.  I don't care if I have to shore fish or if I get a chance to take out an SOT.  I'd love to try to rent one, with a pole, with a license, with gear...everything bought over there (I live on the Peninsula); but I'd like to watch my budget at the same time.  Anybody out there care to advise?  Feel free to PM or even to email should you like to run a longer dialogue.  I'm coming over in the end of June.  We eat a lot of fish here so I'd like to get in one meat run...

I have been there a few times and always bring my six piece suitcase rod so I can fish off the rocks. I just do c and r but a lot of those fish are edible. We went with a guide once (Capt. Jonjon) which is kind of expensive. You might study the Aquahunters forum for information. Also, some of the hotels rent sit on top kayaks by the hour.

I was out there in Feb and had good success with my 6WT fly rod and a 1.5 inch chartreuse over white clouser minnow.  Fished the incoming along the rock piles quick stripping, and landed trumpets, some sort of rock bass/grouper, Juvenile Bluefin Trevally (omilu), and 2 different types of goatfish (weke and ???).

If you're not a fly fisher, the locals do something similar with spinning rods called whipping.

I don't go to Maui when I'm in HI, but if I were going there I'd check in with "LocalFishingKnowledge" on Aquahunters. He does some guiding there.

As of a few years ago, no fishing license was required for recreational fishing.

Have you flyfished the bonefish beach on Maui?

You can fish off the rocks at La Peruse Bay, just go far enough from the parking to be out of the Fish Refuge.

Also the breakwater at the Kihei boat launch is available for fishing. As is the shoreline to the north along the walking paths.

No license required, correct.  Kihei has bones, but when I was there the wind and tide were up, and visibility next to nothing.  We ate fish tacos and Hawaiian shave ice instead.  My buddy was out there in December and fished it unsuccessfully, but saw some very large fish.  They're out there for sure.
