Hi everyone.

I'm pretty new to the area, moved to Vancouver WA last fall from Nebraska.  My fishing blood has been rekindled and I'm hooked all over again.  I remember catching a lot of panfish/bass as a kid but there's nothing quite like this back home and I feel fortunate to have experienced even a small piece of it.  Plunking for springers was how it started and I was looking for a way to open up more water to explore... in comes the kayak.

Kayak fishing just looks sexy to me.  I just got mine set up and am taking her maiden voyage this weekend I think!  Likely just a little trout fishing on some calm water, but hey its a start.  I have big plans in mind once I'm comfortable and have done some basic safety stuff in a fairly controlled environment.

Thanks to those who are willing share their sage-like advice.  This newbie sure appreciates it and has learned a lot from lurking

   Welcome to the addiction ryno,

If you've been "lurking" for a while--you know there are a lot of NWKA people close to Vancouver.

What kind of boat did you get ? Half the fun is getting it set up and then tweaking what you've done.

I don't fish down your way to often--but have fished BattleGround Lake. It's not far from you and there are a lot of fish there. Might give that a shot.

I would urge you to wander through the safety threads to help prepare yourself for our colder water. This ain't Kansas ( I know--but it's close).

Have fun and post up your journey. We are all learning (hopefully).
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Thanks for the kind words! I have ventured through the safety threads and I feel pretty comfortable that I'm prepared. While the water wasn't as big, I did a fair amount of boating and canoeing as a kid, it's just been a while. Kind of like riding a bike, though!

I bought a Jackson Kilroy to start. I agonized over the paddle/pedal and SOT/SINK but ultimately I thought this would be a good start, especially for slow water/lake fishing. I love all the perks and the dashboard that it has and have added a fish finder, anchor trolley, light downrigger and all sorts of fun things to try.

Ill prbly pick up a SOT/pedal yak in the not too distant future. I like toys :)

Hi Ryno, from another newbie...  Where in Nebraska do you hail from?  Spent 27 yrs in Omaha area and moved back home to Puget Sound a few yrs ago.   I actually got into kayaking first (as a scuba platform) and then just recently started looking at fishing from it.  I *love* being out in the salt, even if just the Sound locally.  Demands respect but that's part of the appeal...   8)

Born & raised in Imperial (SW Nebraska).  Not a stoplight in the entire county and the nearest fast food was a 60 mile drive!  After college in lived in Omaha for 10years though.  Like the city, but wanted a change and the NW has lots of appeal.  I hope to add some salt water fishing to my repertoire in the not too distant future, but I feel like I should spend some time in calmer water until I get some needed experience.

What brought you to Omaha?

Ah yes, been thru Imperial on my way to Denver  :)  I was stationed at Offutt AFB for a while, ended up getting out and then working civil service in Lincoln for a long while…
