Hi Folks,
First time poster. Thanks for the great forum!
I work for Jackson Kayak and I am doing a little bit of research on shark vs kayak angler incidents. Nothing sensationalist, just trying to understand the scale of the issue or if there even is an issue.
Looking at the 'official' reports that I can find it would suggest that the problem is fairly small but real all the same.
I would love to get first-hand information on any incidents involving sharks acting aggressively towards kayak anglers. Also if you know of good sources of this information I would appreciate the lead.
Please email ([email protected]) me or reply to this thread.
Thanks!
Sean

I can't recall anyone on this board actually getting attacked by a shark.  One guy out at Pacific City (IIRC) had a GWS get curious and spend an uncomfortable amount of time watching him, but never attacked.  Probably been some other incidents, but I can't recall them.

I recall hearing of some other guys getting hit (maybe half a dozen), with damage to their kayaks but no injury.  Then there was that guy in HI that bled to death after a (presumably) tiger shark bit his leg.

But considering how many people are out there fishing in sharky waters my impression is that it is a minor issue overall.  Until it happens to you, anyway.

I haven't heard of any aggressive stuff up this way.  Ravdakot had a blue shark follow him for a couple hundred yards last year.

Those damned dogfish sharks are always harassing me though.  They bite my line every time I try for salmon and then have the nerve to try and poke me with those barbs on their tail.

Try nor cal kayak anglers. They seem to have an attack about once a year down there.

I had a big blue do a drive by to check me out last year. He was close enough to poke with a fishing pole if I wanted. I guess he was satisfied with the look and just kept going

I had a few nurse sharks not care about me at all on some flats in FLA a few years back.   I tried everything I could to hook them but they were not interested.
I also spooked a shark off of the Massachusetts coast once, it turned tail once I got within casting range.

A couple of years ago one of our members, Pelagic, posted a short video of a shark swimming under him at Pacific City.  I believe the title was "Landlord with pics".  Should be on here somewhere.

Back in November of last year I had a GWS check me out. It followed me about 80 yards before it dissappeared.

If you go to (Pacific Coast Shark News or Shark Research Committee) might be one in the same they list all shark attacks from BC to Southern Cali. that people report in. I think they even have a special section on kayakers. Petty much what surfers use to see any activity in their neck of the woods. Hopefully this will help you out.
