Is it possible to rent a VHF radio at one of the tackle supplies at Depoe, I am traveling from Idaho and a VHF radio isn't something I have laying around, and I am not sure if I can justify purchasing a radio for a single day or two of fishing; testing coastal fishing out for a first time and I want to make sure I am following all the safety procedures by the book.

If you exit and enter with another yak that was a radio your ok for the port and coast guard end but it's a good idea to have one for safety reason or a cell phone in a dry bag minimum.

We have cellphones with dry bags any time we go on the water; piggy backing off another yak with a radio is something I didn't think about thanks!

Also make sure you have a signaling device ( whistle and or horn) and an  Oregon  invasive species permit, if I forgot to mention something someone else will chime in.

I don't believe anyone has mentioned having a flashlight yet.
It seems IIRC that the Coast Guard Auxilary that inspected me last year wanted us to have a light on board also.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

For those who haven't been through it before - the Coast Guard Auxiliary inspections are:

a) voluntary - you do not have to agree to them, and

b) non-binding, meaning that they have no enforcement authority

That said, they are very well-meaning folks who only wish us to be safe out on the water. I usually submit to them, and put their sticker on my yak. Whether you do the same is up to you. However, Coast Guard personnel and Lincoln County deputies do have enforcement authority. I suggest full cooperation with them. Last year, the county deputies came by on Friday evening and gave us a pretty much drive by inspection. I think they have found that kayakers are pretty well prepared.

My suggestions: buddy up, enter and leave with someone who has a radio if you don't, fly a flag, don't push your limits too hard, and have fun. Everybody is a winner at this tournament unless they don't come home. Be a winner...

The inspections are pretty painless and I have noticed that once the sticker is on my yak, no other enforcement agencies ever stop and inspect me again.  If we keep CG and CG auxiliary happy, we will stay in the good graces and continue to hold large events like this one.  Just my 2 cents.  :)

I was inspected again on Saturday at PC and the guy mentioned the ORC and how they were happy to help out and enjoyed having us there. The inspection of both my and Ndoggs kayaks took all of 5 minutes while we were packing up the gear after fishing.  I posted this before in the other thread, but here it is again. Use the list, lay your stuff out, and it will go much quicker. Thank you:
