I recently had a great day of Springer fishing going 1:2 at the end of a great day.  I had just added yakattack track mounts on my new Outback using the standard screws that come with the tracks.

After my first aggressive take-down from a lively springer, the track pulled out 2 of the screws!  I was shocked and disappointed by this outcome so have reinstalled this track ( I have 3 others on the boat) with screws with nylock bolts and washers. Has anyone else experienced this?  Should I reinstall all of my tracks in this manner?

Did you install the wide (GT175) or narrow (GT90) gear tracks?

You need to get the backer bars, trolling for springers is going to rip those small nuts right out.

+ 1.    Or use as large of washers that you as you can fit in there with the
Nylock nuts.

i cut a rectangular piece of thick cutting board the length of my gear-track, drilled some holes large enough for the bolts, and used that as a backing plate (w/ washers/nuts on the other side). marine starboard would do just fine, too. it's easy to cut and drill and very cheap.

Thanks guys for all of your valuable inputs. I went ahead and put bolts and washers on the backside of the the track that failed. I suppose I should do this with all of my tracks to be sure I don't have a repeat. I am surprised the MFG does not suggest this for all tracks with nuts and washers if not backing plates.  My strikes from my springers were I am sure good hits but I had my drag set lightly so that it would take line rather than overload the rod holder etc.   The end result was still a failure of the screws supplied with the track. My sense is the manufacture's setup with screws is fine for mounting a GoPro but maybe not for a rod holder. Thanks again. Dave

The manufacturer
recommends the fullback plates (the ones I linked) for heavy applications.

On kayaks with wide flat areas on top of and inside of the gunwales, such as the Outback, it's pretty easy to mount gear tracks using bolts, nuts, and washers, or threaded mounting bars.  On my Revolution, however, the area inside the gunwales in the area next to my calves is so narrow and arched that I think that it would be impossible to mount GT175 gear tracks using bolts, nuts, and washers, as most of the nuts and washers would be sitting on surfaces which are at more than a 45 degree angle.  Mounting GT175 gear tracks on my Revolution from the outside using screws was very easy and quick, but Daveo's report of screws pulling out under heavy trolling hits makes me nervous.  Has anybody else had problems with the screws pulling out on screw-mounted GT175 gear tracks?
