Hey folks,

Looking at a possible opportunity to move to the area and wanted to see how many yak anglers there are in portland area.  Also what all is there to fish and many tournaments and all?

I am born and raised in San Diego and hated it for a long time.  Been looking to move to Boiut a new opportunity may present itself in Portland and its the perfect opportunity to start new.

I have been kayak fishing since 2001 and have been thr GM at kayakfishingsupllies.com sjnce 2007.  I am also the Pro Team manager for Wilderness Systems out west and the SoCal HOW chapter founder/coordinator.   Quite involved in kayak fishing obviosly so really nterested in what the area offers and what I can bring to the community.!

Also big waterfowl hunter and do it from yak as well as duck boat so if anybody is a hunter really interested in that as well.  Have a festure article in KayakFish mag llanned this season and would love to talk about trying up there even.

Hope I get the chance to meet you guys soon.

Hey what's up CJ? Portland is a great hub for fishing. Within 10 miles of downtown you have the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. In those rivers you get Spring and Fall runs of salmon, plus steelhead and Sturgeon. There are also good populations of bass and each have a run of shad. Within a two hour drive, is the coast where you've got great bottom fishing spots and ocean, bay, and estuary salmon fishing. Not to mention all the rivers and lakes in the area. Tournaments wise we have there are 5-6 tournaments within a 2-4 hour drive. 3-4 in Oregon and 2-3 in Washington. If you do make it to Portland you're of course going to have to join the HOW PDX team.

Hey noah thanks for the reply, I was looking for your email yesterday actually to talk to you about this but couldnt find..  I definitely look forward to working with HOW up there if I move up.  Seems there is a good amount of tournaments and stuff.  Itd be nice to get to fish one of those things instead of running it.

Actually may be headed up to PDX soon but also I will be at the Salmon Slayride in October as the Wildy rep for the event.  Hope at least some of the Portland folks will be there!

Welcome CJ!

Ditto what Noah said about fishing opportunities.

I haven't done it myself, but Sauvie Island is 10 miles from downtown Portland and provides plenty of waterfowl hunting opportunities including hunting from kayaks.

Regarding membership....  I would say we have a core of 30 or so members from the Portland area that are really active either on the forum or during events.   We also have another 200 or so that are from the area that have signed up, but don't contribute much in terms of posts.  Typical forum demographics.

There are a half dozen or so members in the Portland area that are Prostaff of various kayak companies (mostly Hobie and a couple like myself for Ocean Kayak/Johnson Outdoors).  I don't believe we have anyone for Wilderness Systems (or any other manufacturer for that matter) up here.

Next Adventure in Portland and Hoggs Jo/Mar Hardcore Tackle in Hillsboro both host the occasional kayak fishing seminar.

Should be headed up for a visit within about a month or so, if actual move is to happen I hope to know soon after the visit.  I would think before spring though if it happens.

Will let Matt know you said Hi!  We have an event in 2 weeks so I will see him there.

We occasionally get out duck hunting around here.  Wobbler does it the most. We could probably get you out there, or at least show you where to go.

This is a good spot.

Duck hunting. Did somebody say duck hunting? I do a little  it here and there. Actually, I think that there was some tragedy, in a previous life, that involved waterfowl. I have it in for those suckers

There are several places to go in the Portland area. Sauvie Island, Scappoose bay,  Goble and the coast all have good good opportunities. I will be presenting a couple of seminars on the subject at Next Adventure this coming fall. Give me a call when you get here we will see what we can find.

Hey CJ, Jeff here again (I was working at OEX for a while down in SD).

I'm in Portland with a lot of the others that have chimed in on this thread.  It's a pretty amazing spot to be IMO.  The wife and I moved up to Oregon in 2007 and I thought it wasn't going to be a great place for kayak fishing.  Boy was I wrong!

Hope to see you on the water up here soon!

We have a group that does a good bit of duck hunting up here in the puget sound area.

Fishing up here is amazing.   Halibut,  salmon,  and a ton of trout/bass/and other lake fish.

Jeff I totally forgot about you being up there.  I will check those vids out and be in touch for sure as this progresses.

Sounds like portland offers all the fish and ducks I need.  Very excited for this opportunity and hope to join you folms soon.  I am headed up mid Sept and will hopefully know more after then.  Just in time to kill some ducks!
