I've read that timing is everything when it comes to hooking salmon. First the seasonal runs that evidently start with a supertide. Then the daily tide flows and weather. Finally time of day and fishing reports. Fall chinook season started August 1. I think the supertide was July 11 or so. I've been scanning fishing reports and it seems they are catching salmon in the ocean but even bouy 10 has been somewhat slow. My first question is "are we still waiting for the fall run to start or is it on and the fish aren't biting?" If were still waiting, what indicators do you watch to indicate they are moving into and up the rivers? Specifics (web sites etc.) would be great. I suppose I could post "where do I go" every week, on this forum. I'd rather learn how to be an intelligent fisherman. What about time of day. on average is it best to fish through sunrise or the hours surrounding high tide? For me the ultimate question is when will the fall run hit the columbia, between longview and Bonnevile, and the Willamette?

Thanks in advance for the expert advice. This forum is fantastic!

When they get there.  ;)

It varies, but it is relatively close year to year. Like all things wild, they are waiting for things to be how they want them.  I would just look at reports and keep on the lookout on the various forums.  I was hoping to get out in the ocean this week, but that stupid job got in my way again and the conditions don't look so great this weekend.
