I use a Victorinox 3.5" bait knife. They are cheap 5-8 bucks and CRAZY sharp! I put it right above the top eye where the dark side meets the white side. Push it all the way in and wiggle back and forth for good measure. If it doesn't seem to work try further back or forward along the seam.

I have caught up to a 297 lber on my power boat and usually shot them with a handy .22 and that was the end of the story. When I beached this one it had no damage other than the harpoon tip lodged in it's throat. I took my bait knife and pretty much made the obligatory brain spike and punched it with the harpoon shaft sans harpoon. It still had some fight in it after I had it on the kayak. I don't expected to get another that big so I am not packing heat but I will gill them.

Congrats! That is an impressive catch. Thanks for adding in the story, too. Amazing to me to think that such big halibut are swimming around out in WG. I really thought it was pretty much a chicken coop...

Way to go, man!
