I hate the thought of having the adhesive from tape work its way thru my braid.  Too many bad things can happen.

I almost always back with some mono or in a pinch, I've wrapped a small rubber band around my spool before tieing on the braid.  The rubber band provides some friction so the braid doesn't just spin on the spool.

How deep are you fishing that you can't afford to loose a couple of yards of capacity?

I'm with this guy.  I use an arbor knot.

I'm wondering if you took the spool out of the reel and sprayed a few layers of Plasti-Dip (your choice of color) to the center of the spool.  Obviously protect the side walls from the Plasti-Dip, but the idea is to give the spool itself a thin smooth non slip grip for the braid to hook up to.

When cured, this stuff is really tuff and can be as thin or thick as you like by just adding layers and allowing each to dry well between coats.  The up side is that when you want, it can be removed without damaging the spool.  Sticks tight until needed removed, but peels away clean.

I used the pure rubber tape once. It was a complete disaster. The rubber squeezed throughout the spool. It discolored and fouled the braid from beginning to end. I would think that plasti-dip would do the same thing.
