Hey Girlzluvfishin,

If the Tualatin clears up, then I'll be sticking around home fishing that this weekend. If not, then I'm headed up to Ollalie Lake with the gf, and the doggie...  ;D

Sunday late afternoon, early evening I'll be trying out the Willamette channel around Ash Island, just up from the boat ramp in Newberg. Mcmudpuddle and I paddled it last weekend and there looked like a ton of bass jumping everywhere. I will likely head out there Monday as well.

The more the better...

Pacific City anyone?  The marine forecast right now shows,

FRI NIGHT
W WIND 5 TO 10 KT. GUSTS UP TO 15 KT IN THE
EVENING. WIND WAVES 1 FOOT. W SWELL 3 FT. CHANCE OF DRIZZLE AND
SLIGHT CHANCE OF RAIN.

SAT
NW WIND 10 KT. GUSTS UP TO 15 KT IN THE AFTERNOON. WIND
WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 4 FT. CHANCE OF DRIZZLE AND SLIGHT CHANCE
OF RAIN IN THE MORNING...THEN SLIGHT CHANCE OF DRIZZLE IN THE
AFTERNOON.

And with every intention of trying to participate in the Rockfish tournament I'd like to at least fish the area once before the 20th comes along.  Anybody else eyeing the ocean this weekend?  I figure an early launch to try and capitalize on the 1ft/3ft from Friday night.  Leaving out of Portland.

Gator bait,

would this be a safe area for  a noob?  Pretty stable on boat but you never know!  I may be up for it, well actually me and my friend she is new to this as well.

Also where is Ash island?  on the Willy?

Any tips on Hagg, if I decide to keep it close and fresh?

Hagg Lake.. if you pick up a copy of this months Oregon Fishing and Hunting news they have an article about Hagg Lake and bass including a nice map and some tips from a pro.

Another option is to try an contact a guy called "ExBassGuide" on Ifish's bass and panfish board.  I haven't done this myself, but he's very helpful, even has a series of "how to" youtube videos out there.

I'd avoid Pacific City as a newbie... involves launching from the surf into the Pacific.  Need a wetsuit.

Hagg would be a good bet, if you go early and avoid the water skiers.  I'm intrigued by that Ash Island area in the Willamette... my understanding is it is a quiet backwater area off the main river.  I'd avoid eating anything from there though (Newberg Pool of the Willamette, downstream of Albany.)

From Rogers Landing in Newberg, Ash Island is a couple hundred yard paddle upstream. The back channel has the remnants of an old ferry dock and is calm, quiet and, apparently, loaded with hungry fish. As 3weight said, I wouldn't keep and eat anything resident in this part of the Willamette.

Easy launch, short paddle, $5 launch fee, but lots of stink boats on busy weekends, mostly gone by 5 or 6pm.

Welcome GLF!,

Did you mean the same Pacific City where the surfer got his arm cut off by the dory last week coming in through the surf in just about the same place we launch? Ohh, that one. :o

Actually as awful as that was, its really not that bad a spot. It might be a good idea to make that your 6th trip instead of your 2nd though and experienced company would not be a bad idea. That place is more like yakfishing 201 as opposed to the entry level course.

In fact, if the surf is small, that would make a great place to do the water practice day. That's what we did the last time I was out there with Wannabee and another guy (I can't remember his name, but he sure could surf!). We came in, left our gear on the beach, and went back and played in the surf. Far and away that's one of the BEST ways to learn re-entry and landing skills. In fact, in fact, Wannabe posted a short vid of me demonstrating how not to do a surf landing  ::)

The other spots you mentioned are good, but what about Scappoose bay? I've heard that holds some good bass.

First of all WOW :wav: and thanks for all the info!  Second looks like I will be on call this weekend for work so I have to keep it here.   I defiantly want to go practice before I try to head out on the ocean.

I think I will hit Hagg, I will look up that article thanks Steve!

Fishesfromtupperware, I have heard the same thing, I haven't bass fished in years.  So I guess I better read up on what people are doing.

I double checked the Hagg article last night.. it was actually in the early July 3rd? edition of Oregon Fish and Game News so it might be hard to track down.

Here's a PDF from the Luhr Jenson lure company about Hagg Lake

http://www.luhrjensen.com/techreports/541%20henry%20hagg%20lake%20(or).pdf

They suggest specific Luhr Jenson lures, but you can certainly use similar non-LJ lures just as well.
