Just a shout out and invite to anyone who would like to float the Sandy for winter steelheads next week. Waiting for the rains to pass & Friday is looking promising. Bobber dogging & float fishing glo bugs, jigs, beads & bait. Tight lines & dry socks!

What part of the river are you thinking about? We did the lower section (Dabney to LC) a week ago and caught one steelhead. Give a shout  and I will try to join you.

Thats awesome & thanks for the inspiration. How long did the float take you & what was the level that day?
The mother nature will dictate where I go Friday. Recommendations welcome guys, but I'd like to float Oxbow to Dabney as long as the river level looks good and I hit the water early because I know that it's a ton of good water and a long float. It varies but I found that I usually spend about 1.5 hrs/river mile when I'm fishing it hard in the yak.

Did you guys do this?  I was fishing the Sandy on Sunday 2/15 and noticed two guys in kayaks go down from Oxbow.  I was totally impressed, and really didn't think you could do that drift in kayaks.  Only thought Dabney to LC was possible?

You may have saw Michole yesterday on the Sandy too. I know he was there as well. He was in a PA 14 and most likely fishing a Spey rod

The float took about 4 hrs. We stopped and explored several holes along the way.  The water level was low. We had to stop and walk the kayaks at one point.
As for the fish caught, they all choose to go after a homemade pink and elkhair jig. This  jig has been responsible for all of my steelhead this season. it is interesting how they all seem to be confused and widely spread out.
The eyes are getting heavy and it is time to go to bed.  See you all in the morning.

Good stuff! I'm inspired!

I did a float this last fall from LC out to the delta chasing coho's which turned out to be kind of a disaster.  I thought it would be essentially slack water all the way to the mouth but it turned almost bone dry and was just inches deep.  Had to abandon plans of making it to the mouth and just bank fished a bit lower than the I84 bridge.  Caught a jack coho, so it wasn't a complete failure  :)

What section did you float last week?  I'm contemplating floating Oxbow to Dabney and water levels are at 9.4 ft...is this doable?  Any advice appreciated.

We floated the Dabney to Lewis and Clark section. I t was low and we had to pull up the fins once.  As for the upper part, I floated it last year once. It was doable but there are some good sized Rapids. Cannot help you much there.

Oxbow to Dabney is a great float & doable even as low as 9.5 ft. You may have to leash it through some flats but that's a great opportunity to bank fish it. There is one rapid to be ready for within the first mile after putting in at Dabney. 4hour float if you fish from your yak the whole time.

I would very much like to go. I fished Dabney to Lewis and Clark without any difficulty last weekend - I hope I attached a photo. No fish but I was able to stand up and spey cast as well as turn the mirage drive around and slow my drift while fly fishing with an indicator. I did a drift boat trip last spring on the Sandy from Oxbow to Dabney stretch and would really like to do it in a kayak.
