Rudy, I had caught the Salmon Sharks in Jacks Bay out of Valdez in the early summer. I used some pretty big Penn International Reels and 5 feet of air craft cable for a leader, they were not fussy about presentation. I think the largest we boated was over 500 lbs. they are good to eat if treated correctly. You'd need a taxi to get there however.

Recently??? Summer is ALWAYS a better option!  lol.  I know the fishery was going crazy in PWS around 2005-2009.  I think it has fallen off significantly since then.  See the appendix at:  http://www.afsc.noaa.gov/refm/docs/2011/goashark.pdf

But I am game!!!  More research being done!!!!!!

I just talked to Dave Pope at SharkTooth Charters in Valdez and he said that the shark only pull into the Valdez area for a day or two each year and not in great concentrations any more. However he said that many of the sharks have been tagged and the schools can be tracked. He gave me the site but I can't read my writing. Mr. Pope was part of the shark tracking, he helped with the tagging. More research  to do.

check the bottom for a pic of where the sharks are at, at any given time. There is a link in the article to see almost real time tracking

Thanks Willbd!

dudeman,  awesome,  it could be the final piece of information that matches what I have heard that moves the seriousness level up a notch.  Looks like Dec to Feb they are close in.  Kinda goes against common wisdom but there must be tons of food in the water.  Same reason we catch the kings.  Everyone I know is still catching halibut (as a by catch to troll)!!!!

oooo....

Awesome video! Rudy I am new to alaska kayak fishing and would love to get out... Whenever. I don't have a yak just yet ( still figuring that ou). If you ever need some company or wouldn't mind a tag along id love to go. I'm also really into spearfishing . Those halibut you got in shallow would be a great diving opportunity!

I like your attitude! Spearfish halibut?  I'll play support and above water camera guy!!!!  I know Kenai guy is interested!!!!

I've got extra kayaks. Get some outerwear and lets go!!!! How big are Ya? I have a women's suit for my GF that I've used. I'm 5'8 190lbs.

Not to be too narcissistic, whenever I show or watch that video, even I think "wow, that was ONE year!"

My goal is to get my ten year old comfortable on the saltwater this year.  I suck as a fishing partner. I change my mind, I hate operating in other peoples time., I change destination on the fly. BUT I LOVE to fish.  If you can tolerate that and want to tag along, let's go!!!!

Let's slay some fish!!!!!!!!

I've got all the diving gear and years of experience just need someone who knows a good spot. I'd be willing to show someone the diving/spearfishing ropes too. I've got an extra gun and some other extra gear. Not sure if this would be do able in march? Or if they are not in shallow till the summer? If not I'd be interested in some yak fishing till then.

Shallow water stuff starts late April and goes through May.  You can still find them shallow all summer but that's the peak.
The issue diving the inlet is the current.  I can see two kayaks, one person dives, the other tenders the kayak and keep an eye above water with a diving flag.  I'm thinking maybe evn some kind of tow line and planer to help get the diver down maybe?

Its not just halibut, I am pretty sure you could spear a king to.  I've seen videos from SE alaska.  Tell me that wouldn't be a kick in the pants.  We catch them about 10 ft down in 30 ft of water.

Let's do it.  I have an extra outback.  Let's go!!!

To aid in neutral to slightly negative buoyancy you need a weight belt with lead weights. I typically wear 19 lbs of weight. I have personally speared many kings in southeast. It's a hoot fore sure. Well let's put a trip together in April possibly. In the mean time let me know if you go out for kings and or ground fish and I'd be happy to join.

I would love to try spear fishing for halibut, If you had a kayak spotter, at whiskey you could spearfish in the kelp beds at high slack or low slack to the left side of the parking lot. I haven't done it before but would love to try. You would only be diving in 15 to 20 ft of water too. lots of kelp and have to deal with the tide when it changes

Sounds great! Do you having diving experience? I'm definitely gonna try it when the conditions are right

You could totally do it. I think with a kayak spotter you could easily dive three hours in modest current per tide. . Holy cow. Can you imagine hitting a 50 pounder???  Especially if the rule was you can't buoy it off until it's close. Haha.

any low slack or high slack with low wind and waves you could free dive that spot. I don't have any dive experience or spear fishing. How much would the investment be for the gear. Wetsuit looking at 300 to 400 ish?? dive belt? gloves? flippers? snorkel? spear gun? good knife to cut if u get tangled in the spear line or kelp and a dive flag for the kayak. I would love to try probably could only go for about an hour or a lil more.
