When I can't get out to salt water, which is most of the time, I frequent my local lakes. I found one that is just chock full of little 8-10 inch stocked rainbows which are fun to wrassle, but not enough meet to bring home. There is a big hole in the middle of the lake, which is where the 'yak comes in, and the last time I was out there, I got into something big, that put the tip of my medium action spinning rod in the water and tried to keep it there. I got close enough to the boat to see it was beg and troutish, but couldn't see specifics.
Any tips on weeding through the little guys and targeting the big ones at 30-ish feet. I don't have a ff, so I'm looking for suggestions, maybe in the way of a jig that I can draw them up with. Cheers!

ArmyJim,

Do you know if that particular lake has and Bull Trout or Lake ("Macinaw") Trout in it?  I know their native to most of Canada, but I don't know about Alaska.  They also stock them down here in large cold lakes.

Anyway, a couple methods come to mind..

Trolling with a downrigger and a larger lure
Jigging with a 4 oz iron similar to what you might use for rockfish.

Look up some general lake trout fishing tips.

I've heard rumors that they are lakers, but I haven't confirmed yet. I was thinking rockfish jig, too. I just rigged one with a slightly smaller hook thats about 2 oz. Just out of curiosity I tried one of my Crippled Minnows last time and freakin' impaled a little rainbow with it, so I,m going to try again with a hook that will be easier to get them off of. Or maybe I should go even bigger... I also just picked up a Buzz Bomb that I'm going to try.

OK, now I've gotta know what's down there!

Make sure to share a pic with us when you finally land it.
