Alaskans,

Do any of you care to share where and what price you're getting your herring at?  I know Sportsman's/Cabellas/Bass Pro can have some pretty high prices.

For the military folk:

The Elmendorf BX(to the left of gun counter) has 5lb bags for $21.00, and green/blue/purple for $9.00 a tray.   I just found this out today, and will shop there until one of you shares their better source!

West marine the tray herring is about 7bucks. Lot cheaper than a lot of places. I hear there is a wholesaler for 5 bucks a tray.

For halibut, if you are serious, a freezer and buying bulk is cheaper than buying bags every time.

I'm going to go to Whittier to jog up a 5 gallon bucket. They are super fatty so need to turn them up with salt. Works for halibut. Not so much for salmon as they look terrible often agree brining and are too soft to fish without brining.

First week of July last year. Herring starts as soon as salmon processing starts which should be now.
