Just received the four-inch Geartrack segments I ordered from Yakattack, and realized I didn't order any fasteners. What are you guys using to install these on your kayaks? I most need to install a section of track so I can mount the Lowrance Elite 4 Chirp.

Mine came with fasteners from YakAttack (GT90). I also ordered the full-back backing plate  Are you sure you need them separately?

Fasteners should be in the package

I bought Scotty track segments which don't come with fasteners, either. I used stainless #10 panhead machine screws, 1.5". #12's the heads were too wide for the track. I was attaching them to the removable mounting plates on the Predator. I put a washer under the nut. I did not bother with loctite or a lock washer. Maybe I should have or will go back if they loosen up.

If you are just going into the wall of your kayak, if you can possibly reach from inside, a plate is a good idea. If not...I dunno whether I'd use drywall screws or a rivet. Certainly goop would be in order regardless.

Which track did you get? Here is the backing plate for the GT90:

Just took another look. I got the GT90-04 trac segments, and the do have fasteners staeled between the labels. Didn't see them before. No backer track though. Looks like I could fabricate easily from flat aluminum bar stock.

You are on the right "track" now.

Yes. You can make your own, but large stainless steel washers would probably be fine too. I was impressed at the quality and the fact that the Yakattack backer plate holes have tapped threads. That would be difficult to reproduce in the home garage without the right tooling and I don't think necessary anyway.

Good luck!

The backer plates are awesome.  Be careful with the supplied bolts, they can be soft  I've been told it's because they are marine grade stainless, but it felt like aluminum to me.

I purchased some GT-90s last year and installed them on my tandem. I backed it with a chunk of plastic cutting board. I've also backed RAM mounts this way too for several years. It's been working great. Just a thought...

That will definitely work too. For me the backing plates are worth the $$ because the make installation in tight or hard-to-reach spaces so much easier due to the threaded holes; once one screw is in you're golden.

I believe that rigging bullet is good enough for most those situations.

There are assorted scraps for sale at Tap Plastics that could be put to use as well for beefing up a mount point.
