Honestly, I had the Boga but sold it. I use the plastic Fish Grip. But still, I have had problems with fish "resurrecting" themselves after appearing calm and they always do it when it you least want them to. Your mileage may vary but the Fish Grip is a solid tool for sure, plus it floats and if I wear gloves with a Fish Grip I can usually keep the fish under control. If I was releasing 30lb fish all day long, I'd reconsider getting a Boga or something like that once again. I don't have any experience with other models/brands...

Boga's are hard to beat. I've used them for a variety of fish, from redfish and speckled trout in the southeast to all species of salmon in AK, as well as halibut and rockfish. I've landed thousands of silvers using them, both to keep and to release, and they are great. Once they lock in, that fish is not going anywhere, and its really easy to keep them in the water for a release while still having access for hook removal. No rolling them around in a net trying to get their head up while they thrash and roll. Mine have made through 3 seasons of guiding and are still going strong.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen any knock-off that stand up to the abuse. Some barely work from the get-go, while others start to wear out pretty quick. If you don't plan on catching many fish, that's no problem. ;) But hey, optimism is half the battle. That doesn't mean that there isn't one out there that is just a good or better, but I don't think you're going to find it a your typical big box store. Maybe there is another innovator out there like Eastoboga still trying to find a market.

+1 on attaching a float to it, that's an expensive splash.
