Ok, I even hate posting this.  But it is what it is.  Been desperate for my June king and I spent most of june chasing halibut with guests and my kid.

So I did what any desperate kayaker would do.  I fished the "ditch" other wise known as Ship Creek in Downtown Anchorage.  Tried it two evenings with no results.  Then last night I ran into a local legend Yogee who used to post a lot on Alaska Outdoor Journal.  He showed me the spot and set up.

Launched at 6am, into the office at 8:30am.

Notice I said I landed a CHinook for the tenth consecutive month.  Not sure most folks in Alaska would call it a king.  Its a pretty big Jack or a super tiny king.  Nice Chunky fish though.   Genetic analysis would confirm though that it is a Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, which as a simpleton, roughly translates into King salmon!  Might try later this evening to make feel a little better about a better sized one since I have a proxy.

Rudy, with nothing but rocks and dirt for scale, you could have told me that was a 30 lb fish I'd have to believe you.

Congrats on 10 straight months of Chinook.  Long Live Land the King.

WTG!

I am still impressed even if the fish is a bit on the light side /wink.  The summer kings are supposed to be the easy ones, though!

I still can't believe you day-trip to Homer from Anchorage through the snowstorms... DAY trip ?  That's like a 5-hour drive/fish/5-hour drive sandwich.

F'in Rudy!  I'm sure you'll be posting a picture later today of a hail Mary 30lb summer king.
Even if you don't you're still The Man!  How many power boaters can claim a king in every month of the year?

LOL.  thanks guys.  It has been a struggle.  I was going to give up because I really didn't wanbt to catch my fish out of Ship Creek but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.  It's called the ditch for a reason.  its also muddier than heck.  I have landed hundred of kings from here but it has always been from shore.  I didn't even know you could fish it from a boat until i spoke with a few folks then AKfishripper posted that he had done it.

Here's the beautiful scenery from the spot I caught the fish. Makes me laugh thinking about it.

Thanks Spot! Outside of powerboaters, I bet its less than a handful, at least here in southcentral Alaska.  If and when I get my July and August fish, I will ask around.  Don't want to jinx myself yet.   The "ditch" does produce some really nice fish.  A few from past years...a long time ago since I haven't fished it in a while.

Hey now!! Lol. There used to be a time in my life where every article of clothing I wore was black, white or a shade of grey. ThAt way I could grab anything and it was sorta kinda color coordinated. As you can see it didn't always work. The important thing to note is the FISH!!!! Even more stupid, I was using roe. Haha.

That is so totally bad-ass. You are setting a very high bar for anyone to match. I couldn't say if any or at best many powerboaters can make that claim.
Keep at it--- 12 isn't far away.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Woohoo!  Its really because of the kayak!  Flexibility + economics = more time on the water which has a high if not 1 to 1 correlation with the number of fish caught.

Winds picked up so I didn't go this afternoon.  But if they open up the Kenai, I may try and C&R one to make up for the average size.  I am a little leery since I know I'll catch some flack, but I guess if the trained biologists say its ok, and I take care of it and release it carefully, I may give it a go.

Of course I can fish "The Ditch" again tomorrow.  lol.
