Howdy all,

Just moved to Portland from NC. I'm fairly new to kayak fishing, mostly fishing for Bass in lakes near my old place in the Sandhills - but I've got the bug bad since getting here. Needless to say, I'm trying to learn as much as possible about the great fishing here in the NW -  I don't even really know where to begin. So I guess I'll keep my first question simple ... Looking for advice on what to do/where to go If you've got an afternoon to kill around Portland (and you want to catch fish)?

Many thanks,

Savman

Welcome to the PNW! The willamette offers bass and sturgeon very close by. If you really want to have a great tine think about coming to ORC this weekend. See the events section for details buts it's a great chance to meet a ton of great people and catch some tasty fish.

Welcome fellow big tuna owner, if you want to start getting salt water on that boat hit me up when you can make the 1.5 hour drive to the coast for some bay fishing.

At this time of the year, for me it's fishing for smallmouth or largemouth bass or trout locally around Portland. Do need to get over to the salt one of these days tho.

Welcome to the Pacific North West and the NWKA forum. Here's a great link to get you outdoors and on your way to fishing from your yak. Its "Fishing in Oregon - 50 Places to go Fishing within 60 Minutes of Portland"

Many thanks guys, I am pretty damn excited about getting on the water out here.

Mojo, thanks for the invite. As soon as we get settled in, I'll hit you up. I am all about heading west, learning something new, and hopefully putting some tasty fish in the freezer.

welcome to Portland! I am a fellow NC transplant (from Greensboro 1991) and it took me so many years before I discovered what an awesome place Portland is for fishing. Also it took me even more years before I realized how many doors kayak fishing can open for you here. It looks like you aren't going to waste so much time because you already kayak fish and you have found this forum, which is the best fishing resource you can have in my opinion.
I don't fish for bass very much but I have been walleye fishing lately in Multnomah Channel. I could show you the ropes if you want. It is a tough, but interesting fishery and we have some pretty good sized fish here.
Other than that, wait until the fall when it starts raining again and I would be happy to take you out for one the craziest kayak fishing experiences you could hope for when the sturgeon bite gets going.
In the meantime, do your research on this forum and get yourself geared up for the salt, because filling the freezer with tasty fish rarely comes easier than here on the Oregon coast.
