We hit PC for a great day fishing with the wife and several other kayakers.  First fish caught was this big ling that had a large rockfish in it's mouth.  As it turns out I had hooked a 17 inch rockfish that the ling tried to eat and was half way swallowed when they came to the surface.

The ling was 38 inches and 27 lbs.  The weight includes the "bait" rockfish as well as another 15 inch rockfish it had in it's belly.

So our question came up...if the ling swallows the rockfish, is that rockfish still part of your limit?

Being retired, they pay me when I go fishing, therefore I am kind of a professional fisherman.

That is one FAT belly on that ling.  Mojo chatted about it while on the water, but I guess I didn't realize who had it.

Nice work!

I've only had 1 so far, and that was out at Hobuck.  It tried to eat a greenling that I'd hooked.  Took a little while to land it as I had a hard time finding an opening for the lip gripper (I don't take a net for bottom fish).  Was able to keep both fish in the end.

Nice!

Note to self: start shoving rockfish in any giant lings caught in the future...

The classic live bait for big lings is a greenling, but those can be hard to come by.  So it's good to see a ling eating a plain vanilla rockfish.  I've had many a ling hitchike on rockfish, but somehow never had the confidence to actually use one as bait.  Maybe it's time to experiment.  Thanks for posting.
