Releasing techniques for halibut

Just curious if anyone had specific tools/techniques for releasing the smaller halibut. In my limited experience, about half of my halibut have swallowed the hook. The majority of those I have mortally wounded trying to remove the hook so I just end up keeping them. I know some may just cut the hook off but I don't see how a fish could survive that long term. I have been using 9/0 big river hooks usually without a trailer. Ideas?

You might switch to a 16/0 circle hook.  Those almost always end up in the corner of the jaw.  Of course the barb is so huge it isn't exactly easy to dislodge.  But on balance you'd injure fewer fish.

Is there a certain make/model that you prefer? I haven't tried circle hooks yet, I've heard mixed reviews. I know they work great from an anchored power boat though...

It's not so easy to dislodge if you're hanging it over the side.  But if you're comfortable pulling it up on your lap, laying it out, curl the hook so the eye is towards the tail and the bend is toward the tip of the mouth.  Slam down on it with the palm of your hand and it will just pop out.
