Howdy all,

Ive been interested in kayak fishing for quite a while, and with having recently gotten out of the Army I figured I would need a new hobby. Living in the Salem, Oregon area, EVERYONE seems to have a Kayak or Canoe out on the waters. After looking into it and reading these forums for a couple months, I finally decided to become a kayak owner and test out my luck.

Thankfully reading this forum kept me held back when I was getting it because I was wanting to buy everything you could imagine to throw on it and make it into a Cadillac. Keeping it pretty bare for a while, with just the necessary safety and fishing supplies.

Anyways, I have zero kayak fishing experience, so I get the joys of having all new experiences, and you guys get the pains of me asking 40,000 questions while I am learning it. So I apologize for the niaveness that may ensue.

Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Welcome back to civilian life, this is a great place to learn.  Take some time to go thru some of the older posts, lots and lots of info posted on this site.
Enjoy.

Hi Swifted,

Welcome back and thanks for your service.  I'm also fairly new to kayak fishing and this is a great place to learn and contribute.  As Cdat mentioned, a lot of the older post have great info too.  Rawkfish will be holding a fall salmon clinic on the 10th at Portland Next Adventure

Its great to check it out if you can.

Hey Swifted,

As mentioned, there are quite a few of us crazy assed (speaking for myself) vets present. What was your M.O.S. when you were still in? Once you get into the swing of things, I think you'll find kayak fishing to be a very enjoyable venture, calming the nerves on those days nothing else seems to. Take care and welcome to the forum.  :icon_salut:

Thanks guys! I was a 31B.. one of the guys everyone hated haha. For anyone that fishes this area on the weekends and wants company I'm pretty easy to get along with. I haven't lived here long so I don't really know where to go. I'm gonna take my first trip to big cliff tomorrow and see if I can come up with anything..
