Pisco,

Right.  Paved all the way except for the last mile to the parking lot... and that one more kilometer down the trail to the beach from the car.  It sounds like it's a breeze to get to, but the drive seems like about 100 miles instead of about 40.

On the map it doesn't look like it's far from Victoria, but it feels really remote once you've got your camp set up on the beach.  It's in the sticks far enough that we see bears on a lot of these trips there.  Haven't had them try to take food yet though.

After the fishing and the beach camping, probably one of the highlights is gazing out across the staight... and seeing how GREAT Washington looks from there.

Well this thread hasn't seen much life since Feb and since the weather is (supposed to be) getting better I think I'd like to revive this bugger. I'd really like to make this trip this summer. Sounds like too much fun. Anyone out there still interested in making it up there?

Z,

I can’t make it this year, it’s a definite “must do” for next year.  WanderingRichard was pretty interested earlier this year… you still there Richard?

Okay, so if you mount up an expedition to go over there, do yourself a favor and go in the deep summer of months of June, July, or August.  I’ve been there in spring, mid summer, late summer, and early fall.  My sample size (total number of trips for any given part of the seasons) is probably way too small, but I always had my best luck with the lings in July and early August.  Saw OUTrageous numbers of black rockfish in mid July and I’ve caught them up to 5 lbs right in the kelp.  For real, just about ANY lure will work for the lings or rockfish if they are around and ready to bite.

Do yourself another favor and stake your site by Thursday night.  The place gets crowded (in a relative kind of way) on any nice weekend.  Remember… unlimited supplies of firewood lie on the beach just past the cliffs that are on the west side of the Sombrio river.  It’s a very easy paddle down there and back.  Way easier than lugging your wood down that hill.  The only wood readily available on the camping beach is logs that are 3’ plus in diameter and the rangers don’t like you to burn those up, but nearly everybody does it until they get scolded.

screw it.. anyone know of a employer looking for a communications tech that doesnt demand they travel 300 days a year?? 1st offer over $50K and decent bennies gets me...
As of July 12th, I am, officially,  retired.
