Hey gang, I know this might not be the right place for this thread ,but...

I am going to pick up a new-to-me Subaru outback today.  I understand that the crossbars on the factory roof are too close together.  I have found a couple work arounds, but the cheeper option only gets me 30 inches of spread.  If I put my T13 in J-cradles, will that spread be ok?

With the J-Hooks very close together,  I would think the concern might be a bit of "Teeter Totter" effect.
With lines securing the bow and stern I can not imagine it being a problem.
I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

Just run bow and stern lines and you'll be ok.

I have a 2012 outback as well. Not happy about how close the bars are either. I run yakima bars just because I has them from my last car.
Strap a Hobie 16 foot Adventure and haven't had a problem. I don't run bow or stern lines but I wouldn't recomend the same just because there is a chance of the boat coming off.

On the 2002 Subaru the cross bars are adjustable. I'm not sure how far apart the ones are set on mine, but I know it will hold a 14ft kayak just fine, with or with out bow and stern lines.

My old '07 Subaru Outback cross bar spacing was about 38" center to center.....I carried my 2010 Hobie Outback  on it using 48" Yakima crossbars with rail grab, Mako saddles and I installed the "showboat roller" to protect the rear spoiler. I also tied the bow and stern to the car for additional safety......this worked great until I bought my 2012 Outback.
The Subaru designers got too cute with the "folding crossbars" and reduced the spacing to 30".......I was not happy when I  discovered the spacing had been reduced, so I ended up buying a Hobie Trailex trailer.
A few months later I sold the Hobie Outback and bought a 2013 PA-14.....In the end, having the trailer was a blessing in disguise and has served my use very well.
