Not for sure yet but I am hoping to go To PC Saturday.

Be aware there is a surfing competition at PC this weekend, so prepare for the beach to be even more crowded than usual.

At least the sharks will be distracted...

If its "any" salmon, is the use of a gaff allowed?

Page 9, Oregon regs:

Quote
[UNLAWFUL TO:]
Attempt to snag, spear, gaff, net, trap, club, shoot or ensnare any game fish. A
hand-held landing net may be used to land legally hooked fish. A gaff may not be
used to land hooked salmon, steelhead or other freshwater game fish in inland or
ocean fisheries;

holy moly that's a serious haul!

i don't think anyone that brings up that amount of crab is in need of changing much of anything. so, while i wouldn't consider this a critique, but just stating some things that i found make my crabbing outing a little easier:
1. a bag to hold your haul (laundry bags work great - have a tie at the top)
2. sinking/leaded line (easier to haul and coil, less likely to get tangled in your mirage drive/rudder, etc...)
3. using the side of my kayak as a fulcrum point when hauling up, 'cause attempting to lift straight up is a bear of a time

This was another first for me yesterday.  I caught it on a shrimp fly.

I ended the day with 28 and 29 inch lings, and one rockfish.  Caught a couple undersized lings and lost a few shortly after hookup.  The rockfish bite was pretty slow.

Great day to be out at PC and it is always nice to meet some new NWKA members on the water.

Even though the swell height and weather conditions aren't really too bad right now, I have noticed for me that when there is a really flat day wedged in between higher swell days or heavy weather conditions, fishing can be less than productive.  My better days were when there are several days in a row of consistent swells/weather.

Crab seems to be hot this year out there in the ocean.  Nice haul!

Great to meet some new folks at PC this weekend. Nobaddays, it was fun fishing with you. Next time keep that flounder for me!  ;D

The rockfish bite was slow indeed, but after ~8hrs OTW we got pretty close to limits with 4 lings, 5-6 rockfish each, and the Cabezon Queen took home a cab (I let my legal cab go). The fish were there, but we went through a lot of gear trying to find out what they wanted.

The water was insanely clear! We were watching fish hit our lures at 30 feet deep in places - I couldn't believe it. It reminded me of Hawaii. I think the water clarity was related to the slow bite.

Catches of note: I caught my largest rockfish of the year so far at 20.5". Lost 1/2 inch on the board after he sat on ice; lesson learned. I caught my first smurf-fish of the year as well, and man that meat was seriously blue! Christine caught the biggest kelp greenling I've ever seen with my own eyes - a quick measure before releasing looked like over 18". I also caught the largest male kelp greenling I've ever caught at 16.5".

Every trip to PC is different, and every one of them has been special. I'll never forget gazing down into the water and watching a ling (30"?) follow my greenling up from 40 FOW.

Fishing was very slow for me today.  5 hook-ups with 4 landed.  2 short lings, 1 black rockfish that I dropped when trying to fasten to my gameclip and 1 unidentified rockfish that I released.

The good part is that I set a crab pot that I borrowed from a friend.  Feel free to critique...

Dave

Dang, nice haul! Remind me to drop my pots beside yours next time I see you!  ;D

It was good to meet you on the beach - sorry I didn't see more of you on the water. I 2nd the above comment that a bag works well for the crabs. I use a game bag (from the hunting section of Fisherman's). I used to use burlap sacks but they shed a lot of burlap material and it gets messy quickly.
