I just bought a scotty rod holder and am a little nervous about mounting it. I have read posts where people have used bolts and silicone to attach the holder but my yak currently has no hatch so a bolt is out of the question. If I just use screws do I need to use a marine glue as well, or will the screws hold on there own?

It is an ocean kayak Malibu two XL. I plan on putting two hatches on it so I can rig up the FF I bought today but I have not got the hatches yet. So should wait on the rod holder install until I get the hatches put on?

Yea, good idea. Much better to mount with stainless nuts and bolts IMO. Don't need a pole holder for jigging anyhow.

If you need to use blind fasteners, (no access to the backside for nuts), you're much better off with pop rivets, than screws.

Well nuts are another option for mounting in blind areas, at least for objects that won' t have a lot of torque put on them.  For a rod holder, I'd certainly wait and use stainless steel machine screws, nylock nuts, and fender washers.

I guess I will be waiting on my rod holder until I get the hatch in :'(. To bad the stupid things are so expensive.
Enjoy the ride!

Merlin, do you have a rivet gun?  I can send you some expanding rivets that should hold for now (courtesey of Capt Dick Enterprises, one of our AOTY sponsors).  When you get your hatch in, you can replace with nuts and bolts.

Damn Allen, you need to change your handle to "Papa polepole".

I prefer "Pimp Daddy polepole".  Seriously, if anyone wants to try out some of these rivets, PM me your mailing address.

Enjoy the ride!
