4 of us went out yesterday started out in 120 feet of water trying to get a couple small cod, had plenty of taps but no dice.  After that we moved to 140 and I got my first one 12 pounds jigging a blue and white Kodiak custom, Then everybody started hooking fish TONS of cod. Two of the guys with us had not got a halibut from their yak so it was pretty fun to watch them get there first limit. I think I threw 7 small ones back and finally got my hands on a 15 pounder, I WAS SICK I didn't bring my downrigger I marked kings everywhere and saw 10 or 12 roll .....next time....next time

Sounds like a great day, can't wait to get out myself.

In your experience, would a Deep Six or other type of diver be effective to use versus a downrigger? I've already spent a ton rigging my new yak, getting the wife to buy off on more so soon would be a challenge. Tight lines!

Yeah a deep six works fine that's what I used to use before the down rigger for silvers but honestly I don't have a whole lot of experience with kings I know they work just fine around whiskey gulch but the few kings I've caught out of homer have been 60 to 80 ft but with enough weight you can get down there I know yesterday saltykayak hooked up at like 20 ft in 40 ft of water I'm sure rudy will comment later that's a good question for him about weight and size of diver

I caught pretty much all my kings in Homer last year using 6-8oz banana weight in about 30' water. Very close to shore, obviously depends on where the bait is, etc.
Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga except I get to kill something.

Thanks for the replies. I'll be in Homer for the tourney next month, guess I'll set up three rods...one with a deep six and flasher, one with a banana weight and flasher and one rigged for mooching.

The advantage of a downrigger over leaded line, weights, or divers is that a downrigger is much more precise.  If you see fish at 60 feet, you can run your lure at exactly the same depth.  With leaded line, weights, or divers, you have only a vague and approximate idea where you lure is actually running, and the depth at which your lure is running will vary with your speed, and as a result of turning.

A donwnrigger is definitely on my list for future mods. I think I've got a viable mounting idea worked out, but being new to kayak fishing, I want to keep things simple for a while.

I've got a Native Slayer Propel 13, I'm thinking of going with a Scotty gimbal mount adapter in flush mount rod holders, giving me the option to run the downrigger off either side.

mine is a scotty 1050 on a swivel base works pretty good but then again I don't have anything else to compare to but it works good for me the joy of it is I bought the down rigger and base at walmart and I remember it being under 200 bucks
