Trying to figure out if I can use a Lowrance Elite 4x HD,  that is currently paired with an 83/200 transducer, with a new 50/200 transducer?  Or do I need to buy a new FF and transducer combo if I want to transition to a 50/200 transducer.

In other words... Is the FF itself programmed to work with a specific Transducer or can they be interchanged?

I recently purchased an Elite 4 Chirp.  I was able to select the transducer type from the setup screen.  The first time upon power up, a "setup wizard" did a detection to determine what transducer was connected.  I'm pretty certain you can use the sonar head with either the 83/200 or the 50/200 transducer.  I selected the wrong transducer, just to see what would happen (I didn't get a couple screens for HDI), but the sonar head allowed me to select a different transducer.  So, it's not that smart.

Yes, you can adjust the setting to anything you want, including settings that won't give you any useful info. While the Lowrance FF chirps are smart, they will not over rule their human masters, they were built that way purposely to avoid them taking over the world while silly humans are out fishing.
Should you be looking for info on using that wonderful piece of equipment, this site was recommended to me, I've found it very useful, ordered one of his DVDs, will probably order his "understanding sonar and sidescan".     http://doctorsonar.com/
Hope to get a chance to fish with you sometime.
