Can anyone tell me if the Scotty 244L locking flush mount is water tight (like the non-locking 244 flush mount, when properly installed and Gooped)?  I recall reading somewhere that the locking mechanism compromises the water-tightness, but now I can't find anything definite on the subject online.  I want locking capability, and really don't want to go deck-mount on the gunwales of my new Revo.  Thanks!

A couple of years ago I saw a YouTube video posted by a guy who was competing in a ocean kayak fishing tournament, and had a lot of water get into his kayak via a Scotty locking deck mount which he had recently installed in his kayak.  He warned people not to install those mounts in the hull of a kayak.  The video included pictures of the underside of the mount which showed why they allowed water to enter his kayak.  However, I can't find the YouTube video.  If you can't examine a locking flush mount in a store, you could ask somebody at your favorite kayaking store to take a couple pictures of the underside of a locking flush mount and e-mail them to you.

I suspect that less water will leak into your kayak if you mount one of these locking deck mounts on top of the gunwale of your kayak, than if you mount one in a depression like one of the trays on the gunwale of a Hobie Outback.  But regardless of where you mount one of these mounts in the hull of a kayak, if they leak, that isn't a good thing.

Thanks Pete.  That's good enough to convince me that the 244L is a no-go.  Now I need to do some soul searching to figure out my course of action:
  • Use 244's and hope I don't send an Orca rod holder flying
  • Use 244's and improvise a lock/tether
  • Use 241L deck mounts

Decisions, decisions. . .

Pete,

I found the guy's post you were referencing, with decent pictures of the 244L.  I don't know what he was thinking when he installed them.  Forget the locking mechanism, the bottom of the body section isn't even closed off.  Might as well just drill a 1/2" hole in your boat and leave it open.

Here’s a locking base I made to mount on a gear track on a gunwale of my Revolution:

For a description of how I made this base, see http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=13167.msg144750#msg144750

I'll be going direct-mount for my forward rod holder.  Call it a person quirk, but I have developed an aversion to mounts on mounts on mounts.   ;)

That is a really clean way to get a Scotty holder on a gear track, and circumvent the left-hand torque problem with the gear heads.

Low__Sky -

If you orient a standard Scotty flush mount correctly, there should be zero risk of sending your rod holder overboard. You'd need to lift it up, rotate it about 180 degrees, then keep lifting.

I get that you want a locking mechanism for the Orca so it doesn't pull up when you grab your rod.

My solution: Just get a Folbe with a post mount. You'll be stoked.
