You can use a Hogg trough but mine is too short, so I stole a seamstress tape measure from my wife. I don't think she wants it back. You have to measure from nose to the fork of the tail.

Haha i bet the hogg trough was too short!!  I understand that the measurement need to be from head to the fork. but do you need to have the measuring device touching the fish at all times or can there be a gap betwen the fish and the mesurement.  I am asking to see if i need to buy a seamstress-like tape measurer or if i can use a regular (stiffer) measuring tape.  Or am I way over thinking this? :P

It's a bit floppy and awkward with all the hinges, but with two people you can measure a keeper on the water.
I marked on mine with a sharpie where the 43" and 54" lines are to make it easier to see at a glance.

Just thought of something.  I am going to transfer those marks to the back so I can basically lay the dam thing on the fish, pull it up against it's nose facing away from me, and still get an idea if it's in the zone or not.  Heading back outside right now to do this!
