My family will be camping in Seaside for some clamming the first weekends in May and June (4 days each weekend). Since clamming is only an hour or so a day, my son and I are thinking we should take our kayaks to Cannon Beach (or anywhere north) and try some bottom fishing. We have never launched or fished this area so we were wondering (hoping) that some of you fellas that are familiar with this area might be there during the same time and would be willing to give us some guidance so that we don't do anything too stupid like launch in a poor area, fish somewhere we shouldn't, etc. Please let me know if you would be willing to assist us.

Much appreciated

May 6th-9th as well as June 6th-9th are good tides for Tillamook bay fishing if you decide to go south instead. The only beach launching I did up there was in seaside and it was playing in the surf rolling the yak.

The dories launch at the needles just south of Haystack. Would need to be on a small swell. Maybe 3' and under. And should be up on your surf launch. You'll need a dory permit to drive on the beach. Also Nehalem bay is about 45 min. south of Seaside. Tillamook bay is about an hour. Have fun!

Thanks for the info surforegon - didn't know a permit was required at Cannon. Maybe we'll do the same as Mojo and spend time practicing surf launches at Seaside.

Check where you can launch in Seaside. I'm pretty sure it's the cove to Ave U.

Surf launches anywhere north of falcon cove can be brutal in anything more than a 3' swell. The beaches are quite exposed.

Cannon Beach has fantastic bottom fishing.  There is a rock about a 3/4 of a mile or so off Haystack with great rock fishing.  There is also the whale rocks off the south end of Cannon Beach.  The ling cod reef is a little further offshore, but still doable on calm days.

Cannon Beach is an unprotected launch.  This cannot be overstated.  You must be a strong kayaker willing to get dunked in order to try it.  Surf over 3' will be a no go in the kayak, though I've done 4'.  I try to limit it to 5' with with our dory.  Watch the forecast, it's not impossible to get low surf during that time of year.

I have a dory permit for my truck, but I just wheel my kayak down with a cart.  There's no reason to need to drive on the beach.
