Hello all,

We are camping April 15th at Mount hood RV park and was wondering what lake (close by) would be good for for casting a line?  I am a 51 yrs young and have the Jackson Kraken so I really do not want to pull it a long ways to put in. 😅
Your help and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't mind about an hour drive, you have Trillium Lake and Timothy lake off 26 on the south side of Mt Hood itself.   Otherwise there is the Salmon river right behind the RV resort and the Sandy river on the north side of Mt Hood Village.   I don't know anything about the regs for either river, or the kayakability of either.

I would HIGHLY suggest proper immersion gear (clothing) and a quality PFD for any of the above mentioned waters as they will be deadly cold if you fell in otherwise.  I would be surprised if any of them are in the 40's yet.

Thank you for the advice it is greatly appreciated.  With that said and if I take the yak I surely will follow your advice.  I do have immersion gear and a good life vest.

Thank you kind Sir.

Hi Roger,

We stay at Mt. Hood Village a couple times a year.   I don't normally take my kayak but if you want a lake, I agree with Insayn that Trillium, Clear Lake or Timothy are the closest options.  I think Trillium's only about 30 minutes away.  I haven't been to any of them in years but they all get stocked with trout so I would think there'd be something to catch.

The Salmon River behind the campground is a fairly small little stream (not kayakable) and I don't think t's open to fishing.  Is a nice place for a nature walk and I take my boy down there to hike around and explore.

If you're just itching to fish you could also run over and bank fish the Sandy River with a chance for Steelhead or Spring Chinook.

Thank you BK for the great advice, much appreciated.  I'm not ready for the ocean yet, have all the gear though, just need a little more time on the lakes and rivers to gain experience.  Would love to hook up with some folks for more in depth training so I can graduate to the big leagues. 😄

If you can self recover let me know your schedule and I'll find a day with the right tides to take you into Tillamook bay.

It is still winter in the high Cascades, I would look at the elevation of the recommended lakes, most are snowed in at this time of year!  Might have a chance to get to Lake Harriet (Long drive) or Estacada Lake to wet a line from your kayak.  Plenty of bank fishing on the Clackamas and Sandy rivers for Salmon and Steelhead.
