So my fiancés friend invited us to her cabin on guemes island in 2 weeks and she said its right next to the water. So I was wondering anyone have any experience up there fishing? I have no idea where or what it is and tried research a bit but not much info. I will be doing shore fishing mainly so was wondering what to try for out there and what to bring? If anyone has any info that would be great! I heard it's the west side of the island but that's about all I know :).  Thanks in advance!

Did you do a Google search on "Guemes Island fishing" - because I found pages of results.  Some from the iFish forums, some from the Washington Fly Fishing forum.  All of them seem to have pretty good information and recommendations.

Try it.  You might like it.

Yea I did that majority of them were talking about using boats and trolling 60' of water... Unfortunately I'm shore bound and will not be able to come close to depths of 60' that's why I asked about shore fishing and not boat fishing. I have a kayak but am going with friends that don't so we will be shore bound. Thanks for your reply and helpful info. 😂👍

Not much in the way of public shoreline on Guemes so you might be quite constrained for access.   One park on the north end, Young County Park.   I used to launch my kayak from there to paddle over to Cypress and beyond.   Yellow Bluff Reef on the southwest shore of the island offers some shoreline dropoff but I don't know how you would approach from land.   Beach is all likely private, perhaps ask around if walking the shore is permissible.   Casting from shore might get you some sanddabs or perch, but its a bit late for perch to be in close. No piers that I remember but its been many years since I was there.  You really need a boat.

Not much that's open right now except ling cod.  Whether you can catch them from shore will depend on the underwater terrain where you have access.

Thanks for the info guys. So I'm assuming pinks aren't available at this time? Also what would you use for ling lures/bait from shore? Also I've been reading dogfish are present... Is that true? If so is that possible to catch from shore with squid etc?

yeah,   didn't think about dogfish.  bomb some squid out aways with a pyramid sinker and you may get'm.   I've cast buzz bombs and caught ling.

Pinks run on odd numbered years.  Dogfish will hit any bait if they're there and are hungry.

Here is a shorefishing trick, when the winds are right.

Blow up a small balloon and tie a swivel to it. Or blow up the balloon through the "line end" of the swivel, and knot the neck of the balloon to hold it in place. Put your mainline through the swivel, creating a slide. Let the wind take your line out, then freespool to the bottom. This can get you out much farther than you can cast.

You may be able to use a float, but the balloon with a larger cross section makes a better sail.
