When I lived done in Cali Ab diving was at the top of my list of fun things to do, so I learned one thing when cleaning the things.
The Edges of Abalone foot has little feelers or tenticle like appendages, which are covered in a a black slime type of stuff. It has an iodine taste to it so most people trim it off. I discovered that if you take a plastic scrub pad and scrub it off and it is rather easy to do. you don't have to trim and waste that much. And if you do trim it after scrubing you can run it through a grinder for use in ab chowder. Yummy.
I know that WA dosen't have an ab season (that may change someday) but if you vissit down south it is a helpful note.

We may live without conscience and live without heart
We may live without friends, we may live without books;
But civilized man cannot live without cooks
