Which roof racks are compatible with the Hobie Rev 13's?    Can I transport two Kayaks on my Passat Wagon?  I currently have crossbars only.

I also want to be able to self load one boat if I go solo, so I'm considering a side bar for loading or rollers.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I haul a revo13 and a revo11 on the rooftop of my Prius. I'm sure it's not "rated" for that roof load, but it's secure and nothing moves when I have it all tied down. Bow/stern straps as well as body strap.  I think I was airborne on a drive to Bandon one time along Hwy 101!!

I load one bow forward right side up in cradles and another bow forward upside down on the bare bars. Solo loading works with this configuration too.

Passat likely has a stronger roof compared to Prius? I'm guessing you'll be fine. I run out of room for coolers and gear!!

I have a thule roof rack on my Honda Accord it is rated for 140lbs I believe. I put a revo13 and outback up on it no problem. Outback in malone seawings and revo upside down on the cross bars. I havent had an issue with it using standard tie downs and bow and stern lines.

I bought my cross bars in Portland at re-rack.  They suggested I come back once I purchased a Kayak before deciding on a cradle and other accessories.

Sounds like the Malone Sea wings might be an option.  Any opinions on side load bar vs. back load using rollers?

Do you guys use any padding when placing kayaks directly on the bars?

You need to put a bit more thought into it before deciding on how you'll put the kayak on the bars.

If you're going to put mounts on the side rails - or anywhere they'll stick up - you likely need to carry the kayak right-side up, so think ahead (bb2fish advised me to think about it and kept me from making silly mistakes).

Both mine have tracks and ball mounts on the gunwals I carry them upside down no problem. If you get the Malone seawing get the ones with pullout cradle on the back as it holds the boat and protects the car.

Revo 13 is 28" wide. If you use 58" "headache" bars it should fit like a glove upside down. Throw a half hitch just inside the end cap. The load bars work well.

I had a rack just like yours and got the Yakima Boat Loaders that pull out. They were not all that I was expecting of them. I also learned that I do NOT like round bars. Most saddles, rollers and such that you would want to clamp on to them cannot grip very well and tend to slip (tip over) when loading and unloading. For most whitewater and small recreational kayaks this isn't such an issue. That vehicle is now sold and the rack with it.

Depending on your upper body strength, loading a Revo solo without rollers is do-able. Can you lift the whole kayak over your head? Try it now with the bars you have. Stand between the bars with the kayak between you and parallel to the car. Lift and raise from the center at the handles. Put it upside down directly to the bars and no other padding. Practice and experience will tell you IF and what works best for you. Loading into saddles is much the same, except of course it will be on edge.

I can't tell what the width of your bars are, to say if there is enough width to lay to two kayaks flat on the bars. So you would load one in saddles on edge and the other flat to the bars.

Please always use bow and stern tie-downs. Its not just the down forces (load weight) you are dealing with. Just imagine what forces the wind is applying upwards and sideways at interstate speed and turbulences from trucks and other vehicles. The bow/stern straps stabilizes things as well as secures if any link in the chain of roof rack components fail.

So, at one point I had a kia forte koup and I loaded my adventure island and a buddies revo13 on the rack. It was the yakima Q towers w/ 66" round cross bars. Like others have said, the round bars are ok. I later added landshark kayak saddles and hully rollers to the bars. In order for me to get the correct spacing on that car roof i had to to add the stretch kit extension to it. To get the rollers and saddles not to tip over like others have said, I taped those areas pretty heavy w/ electrical tape. Never had the problem of them tipping after I did that.

I carry my revo 16 and OK prowler directly on 60" round bars on my outback. Never had an issue.
