I'm lost as to what's available in the 6-7' length. As long as it's sorta stiff for jigging and long enough to go around the front of my Jackson Cuda 12 it will work. I'm heading out next week for some salmon and cod/ling fishing so if there is something either wholesale sports or cabelas carries I'd sure like some advise. Cheers, Ed

You will get a lot of different opinions with this question & of course it depends on the angler. I have broken several expensive rods & the truth is your gear for jigging & ocean wear & tear doesn't have to break the bank. Many people on this site will mention the Tiger Ugly stick, and this is a good entry level rod for the price. I would recommend checking out Fish Field's custom 2 piece rod (around $65) that comes with 2 different terminal section attachments for adjusting rod tip sensitivity & backbone. I've caught everything from Salmon, lings, rockfish, & tuna in Baja with this rod, changing out the rod tips as I need for the fish I'm targeting. Beat up some reasonably priced gear & dial in your technique before spending on your dream rod. Just my 2 cents, good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't want to dishearten any anglers here but for me, I am an avid fly fisherman. That being said, I have enough money invested in that that I am not into an expensive meat fishing pole. I have already got a Cabelas salt striker inshore 4000 to fit onto what ever I may end up with. I am excited to hit the waves as the other weekend I was at some local lakes and the waves were crashing over the bow, got the adrenaline pumping for sure. I can't wait to toss a fish on the barby,  the wife will allow me more time when it is paying off. I will also be fly fishing from the kayak as the coho and pinks are off the beaches. Also I have a great spot to chinook fish from the kayak if the sea lions leave me alone

You'll get a lot of mileage out of any of Shakespeare's Ugly Sticks, whether an Ugly Stik Tiger or a standard Ugly Stik - they're about as durable as they get and darned cheap for what you get.

But if you're an avid fly fisher, why do you think you need different gear?  You can and will catch fish for the barbeque in the salt with flies and fly rods.  Take a look at the AOTY "On the Fly" side challenge... http://aoty.northwestkayakanglers.com/leaderboard/flylist.

"Meat pole"?  Saints preserve us!  If you aren't "catching meat" with a fly rod, what are you doing with it?  You're missing out on 90% of the sport.

Sorry, what I should have said is for me to fish a fly in close to 100' of water will take too much time and with current the line will get carried everywhere. I like the fact of dumping the jig to the bottom in seconds. I was checking the ugly stick tigers but was unsure of quality, thanks for reassuring me guys. With fly fishing chum, a cheap rod is better suited as its straight up tackle abuse. Jigging seems the same

I've been using the UglyStik Lite 6'6" (SP 1166 2M) paired with a Shimano Sienna 2500 casting reel spooled with 10# braid/mono for years.  Caught many many big lings and a huge 43" bull redfish on it.  Strong as it gets!

Yet sensitive enough for blue gill and stocker trout.

My son started out with this same setup years ago and it's his go to bass/trout/blue gill rod.  For ocean I set him up with an UglyStik 6'6" (CA 1101) medium/heavy mated with an Abu Garcia C3 6500 spooled with 20# mono.  He loves this for rockfish and lings.  I am actually going to pick up another one of these UglyStiks for myself and retire my normal ocean meat crane Lamiglas Cascade Pro heavy / Abu C3 7000 to just use for sturgeon and halibut.

The UglyStik 1101 has a shorter butt section and allows for easier storage in the hull of our Hobies.

Cheap $$ and seriously reliable!

Check Shimano Sellus, awesome rod for 45 bucks in Walmart (online). I got top water 6.3',  very happy with it, it casts far and very sensitive. But they have and other versions like for jigs, worms, etc.

I liked using the Offshore Angler rods from basspro for sailfish and grouper when I was in FL. My plan is to reuse it in the salt here as well.

The Ugly Stik rods are a good rod,  backed with a warranty.  I have two of them.  I cracked a ceramic eye on the tip of one (not theft rods fault)  and had no problem sending it in for a replacement.

Ended up with a cheapo Shimano rod, I didn't like the look of the handle and pretty much everything on the tiger. Also it's nice that the Shimano breaks down also. At $29 can I don't care if it breaks

Can't go wrong with a 7' medium action Ugly Stick Tiger. It'll last a LONG time if you run every it off after each use in saltwater.

Just picked up an ugly stick tiger so my other cheapo rod will be my backup. Didn't want to get into a derby without a spare rod
