If want to protect your kayak from spray, mud, and road dirt, and you REALLY want to be cool, install some sheet metal behind the railings in front of the trailer, and bolt half of a rubber horse trough on top of the railings.  You'll be the only guy on your street with such a pimped-up kayak trailer.
