My dads been working outa town for a few months. While he was gone he found a weekly auction to occupy some of his time. I was giving him plenty of crap about buying a bunch of stuff to stack up in his temp home, calling him a hoarder and whatnot. He just came home for the weekend with some great stuff to share out of the bed of his pickup though, tackle boxes full of good random tackle, knifes, cool stuff! I'm totally on board with him being a hoarder now!
Among those items he brought home this cast net. I have no idea what size it is, or how to throw it, if it's even legal to throw it anywhere in Oregon. Of course I'll do some research about laws, and hopefully learn to throw this thing in my yard. I'm really intrigued by this net.
Do you guys know anything about the use of these on the west coast? Could a person throw one of these in the calm shallow surf for perch, then put them in a live well and use them for live lingcod bait!? I know I'm pipe dreaming here... just really hoping for some interesting input.

I think for herring and anchovies you can but don't have the regs in front of me. In inland waters I think it's illegal to use live fish.

Nope, can't use it for perch.

Page 19 - General Statewide Regulations:

Herring, anchovy, sardines (See special regulations for taking smelt species.)
Harvest Method: Angling, dip net, cast net and herring jig with any number of hooks.

Lingcod, Rockfish, Cabezon, Greenling, Flounder, Sole, Perch, other Nongame Marine Fish and Off-Shore Pelagic Species.
Harvest Method: Angling, hand, bow and arrow, spear, spear gun, gaff and snag, hook and herring jig.

Also look at Page 81

I just noticed this list.  It's illegal to use a sport fish as bait, and this page lists the marine sport fish species:  http://www.dfw.state.or.us/mrp/fishid/FishIDLists.asp

Does that mean we should be thinking before we use a greenling to catch a lingcod?
The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.

No, greenling are a non-game fish.
You can use live non-game fish for bait in the waters you pulled it from.
Yes you are supposed to count them in your daily bag.

Well, I called OSP :police: and YOU'RE BOTH RIGHT!  Greenling are a sport fish but not a game fish.  And yeah, they count towards your daily bag limit.

That's the key - "sport" fish and "game" fish have different meanings in Oregon. So does "food" fish.

Thanks for all the info! Looks like the cast net is useless to me, but I had fun daydreaming and watching videos about cast nets

That is a good point, but doesn't excite me quite as much as trying to catch perch with it.

I've used one for smelt. Hope to use it some more this summer.
