Check out this picture -  it looks like the astronauts have a metal bracket which holds their neck gasket away from their neck when they aren't wearing their helmet.  The bracket hooks over the ring to which their helmet attaches.

Ok Pete even though I don't wear a drysuit.... cut the tube slightly larger then the circumference of your neck, get a dowel that fits the tube snug, loop it around your neck put the ends together then slide it in your gasket... it should hold the gasket open enough to breath free and return blood to your head.

I have two of those brackets....one on each hand.

I made my neck saver using the 3/8" ID clear hose with the white braided material inside of it. The same kind of hose used for your typical kitchen sink sprayer.  Then glued in a piece of stiffer tube on one side with about an inch sticking out to fit into the other side.

I made it big enough to fit at least a finger and a half thickness between it and my throat knuckle.  Slips in under the gasket, and then pulled up to almost the lip so it can easily be yanked if I go in the drink.

For surf zones, I just don't install it yet, it stays in my center hatch bucket.

I agree, I like my neoprene neck gasket.  It's so much more comfortable and only lets in enough water to dampen my spirits...

I can deal with that.

A dive shop will have or can get a device  for that exact purpose.  I can't remember who makes them though, trident and DUI should. .

lol.  Even with neoprene neck gaskets, something like either the hose ring or the clamps would be nice to get some airflow.  But all you really need is something like a gatorade bottle.  Get seawater, dump in on your shoulders and most of the time you will question whether you have enough gear on as it will cool you down in a hurry.

I don't use my neck ring just for letting the heat out, I mostly use it to keep the gasket from pressing on my Adam's Apple.  After a day of straight gasket pressure on it, I get a sore throat from it.
