If you want to catch a salmon this year, this is by far the best reel for accomplishing that.  Great deal!

I am right handed and use a right hand retrieve.  I am not sure why but always preferred it this way.

Did you have a choice when you learned?  I learned on spinning gear, and I won't buy a conventional/casting reel without a left hand retrieve now.  Most reels aren't even made that way, but more are the longer i endure. :)
Kayaking without wearing a PFD is like drunk driving.  You can get away with it for a while, but eventually someone dies.

I also learned on spinning rods but the majority of the the handle can be flipped to the other side rather easily.
