Mid-winter Portland Sturgeon Intel

Some of the guys at NCKA have experienced drag with 3# claw anchors in SF Bay.  They usually add a couple pounds to the end of the anchor, or a chain above.  Myself I just use a 5# anchor when I'm expecting any current.

What difference would it make between 5# of total weight between anchor and chain vs. just using a 5# anchor?

I just use the 5# anchor because I have one.  Actually I'm a lazy rigger and didn't want to deal with picking up some chain.   

As Brian points out a chain at the front can keep the claws pointed in the better grabbing position.  But a 5# anchor has longer claws.  Who wins at the end of the day?  I dunno.

Just ordered my anchor from Hook 1.  Got the 3.5 lb and plan to add a length of chain.  Once the anchor system is together all it will need is a field test.  A sturgeon would be nice.
