I think you need to be more specific. Pulling plugs is pulling plugs.

I have only done it twice from a drift boat. What would you do, face downstream and paddle backwards??

I don't do it much.just because I find it can be to much to handle for my taste. I don't like drag chains just out of personal fear, but in rivers that are mostly gravel bars and sand its fine.I just pull my rudder and face downstream or up depending on the flow and get fishing.

I'd probably have to face downstream and paddle backwards because my kayak dosen't have a rudder how effective is that?

With your rudder down your ass end is really uncontrollable if its facing the current.no rudder is better.like you said face downstream and paddle backwards. I would go find you a easy slow river one day and practice without a rod for a bit to get a grove going then toss a line out and get some time in b4 you go whole hog with no idea on a more technical river.

I don't do this, so this is just me asking a question: wouldn't it be better to put the rod in a forward holder and paddle forward, into the flow?  I know I'm mighty slow and squirmy in reverse...

Probably. Then stick one of those bicycle mirrors on your hat so you can see where you are going.

I've been wanting to do this on the lower part of the Santiam when the summer steelhead are coming through but have not done it yet. Maybe also use my drift anchor to pause in likely spots.

I'm sorry, Chris, I meant "face forward and paddle into the flow" since I'm so lacking when paddling backwards, but that's not how it reads.

I reckon it would take some effort to keep the line from getting tangled-up with the paddle, so it may not be one of my better questions.

Here's a pic from pulling brads divers w bait & pulling plugs on the Klickitat. Facing up stream at the top of the drift I work the seam of fast to slower water, using my rudder to  vear in & out of the current. Dropping my Plug down through the drift by adjusting my paddling speed. This can be tricky & takes practice in slower water. It is very effective but make sure you have a long run of calmer water downstream to give you time to fight the fish before entering another rapid. Choose your river & stretch wisely.

I will be trying this on the South Santiam here real soon. Pretty slack water with a long calm stretch below. Not sure if I will face up or down, but I will figure it out.
