Ok so, poking around on the old interweb at different yaks, seems like a few are offering motorized yaks or someone makes a way to put a motor be it gas or electric on a yak. Now with this in mind, I know and have been told in the past that as soon as you put a motor on your rig you have to register it in Washington, and looking into that I can come up with about $61 to do so plus or minus various fees I probably didn't find. Now my question is what is the point of going though that mess when at least in my experience on the water no one really gives yakkers a second look, and in my mind the people in authority would be more concerned with the pb's.

Now again I don't really go out on alot of varied waters and haven't seen any coast guard or police boats where I go, I know they're probably out there just never encountered them. On that note does anyone know what the fines/ramifications would be if you were to get stopped by then without your motorized yaks being registered?

This has just been on my mind for a couple days since I've been researching the old town predator xl and am interested in it because of the fact that you can rig it 4 different ways (paddle casting platform flat deck, paddle electronics deck, peddle drive, or 45lb minnkota/electronics deck) I understand that it'd be a pretty large investment to get all that but it's a cool package none the less. Please anyone whose had experience with the xl feel free to tell the good bad and the ugly when it comes to this rig, one thing that's kinda bumming me out about it is the base hull weight of 98lbs, granted that's only say 20 more than my current setup but still.

Like I've said before I love my trident but just thinking maybe it's time to step up to something newer. And I don't know any angler who doesn't like to drool over a shiny new toy and daydream about getting it lol. Anyhow take care thanks if you made it through my ramblings lol.

I know in Tillamook bay the Popo roll in a small skiff that until it’s damn near on top of you you don’t realize it’s “Johnny” as for CG I don’t think they can enforce the “law” as for tickets.
Why not just get a Native Propel or a Hobie and use the foot drives?

From what I have gathered over the years, is that the electric motors used specifically for kayak won't go much faster than what you can paddle/pedal in the first place.  Maybe longer, but when the battery runs low, then what? What you save in leg use on the water, you loose at the ramp hauling the extra weight to and from your rig, and loading and unloading the battery and motor.

The police do not leave kayaks alone, and focus on power boats. I’ve been checked twice within the last few weeks. An officer asked a few of us for our info up at Brown Lee and I just got checked last week on the willamette here in Salem. Whatever route you take it’s best to just get legal. It’s really nice not to have a care in the world when or if they come around. The guy in Salem gave me some pointers on fishing. Much preferred over a ticket!

Casey, have you met you?  Have you seen what you look like on the water?  Of course the PoPo checked you.

Lol, I'd check every crazy yakker I saw if I was a cop in a powerboat. :)  Ya'll are nuts.
Kayaking without wearing a PFD is like drunk driving.  You can get away with it for a while, but eventually someone dies.

Also they're just jealous because you're catching all the fish...
