Back from Lincoln City OPAC meeting. On Sunday Eric & I fished off Devil's Churn near a reef just north of Otter Rock. The weather was balmy, the swell was about 7 feet, there was a light off shore breeze & the chop wasn't bad. Waves were breaking over the reef, so we had to pay close attention to our position. I caught 1 blue, 2 greenling, & 2 blacks. Eric caught 2 blacks & 3 blues (released 2). I trolled on the way back in & hooked into something big. I hadn't noticed my swivel was damaged, so when I got the fish near the yak, it made a last surge & straightened the wire on the swivel. Probably had my drag too tight. Anyway, no more cheap terminal gear for me. We tried fishing the same place this morning, but the front blew us out. My guess is that in another 2-3 years this place might become a "no extractive activities" Marine Reserve.

Paul,,,Good you could make the meeting,, looks like cape Argo escaped this round..        I have about  stoped useing leaders , snaps ect.. 30 lb power pro loop knot  direct to jig, seem to get bit ok. If jig is a spinner and get some line twist, let  bare line out when you paddle for take out .. twists go out . royg

yeh, your right. that's how i used to do it. i started using snap swivels for the ease of changing jigs or lures, cause my eyes ain't what they used to be for close up. had some success w/ blue/silver crippled herring lure @ otter rock. i might try it down at sunset next time.

PNW, I sometimes use locking snaps to make lure changing easier.  No swivel, just the snaps.  They're probably cheaper than the cheap swivels, but they're probably better due to the locking aspect.  I don't recall ever seeing one open up.  I do recall having cheap swivels open up many times.

this looks like the same kind of snap that comes with crippled herring lure.

Hey PNW,

Where do you like to launch from when fishing this area?

Hey PNW,

Park at Devil's Churn parking lot at the north end of beverly beach where all the surfers are. have to carry the yaks down the stairs. best with 2 people. launch from the beach on the south side of the rocks. watch the water, you'll see the slot. when they get the road & under pass work done at beverly beach state campground, you can roll the yaks down to the beach & launch from there when the waves aren't too big. can't do that yet cause of construction. nice camping spot. we stayed in a yurt this last time.
