Hey gang, I haven't soaked a line since PA school started a few months ago, but the term is ending and I get next week off. That said, I'm looking to just have some fun and catch some smallmouth.

I would like to float or wade the John Day for the first time ever, but flows are ~35 cfs at service Creek, which seems low from my reading and complete lack of experience with this river. I know I could stay closer, but the John Day has been on my mind since I moved here 2 years ago and I thought I'd celebrate a successful first quarter of school.

With that in mind, does anyone have a suggestion of a stretch of the John Day that I can either wade or paddle around at this water level? I'm happy to have company if anyone has Sunday, Monday or Tuesday off.

Cheers and thanks in advance for any advice.

That water level on the John Day would be really hard to float.  There is lots of bass fishing opportunities in the slack water near the Columbia.

If you are wanting to wade the John Day, almost anywhere should catch lots of fish.

Being retired, they pay me when I go fishing, therefore I am kind of a professional fisherman.

If you're sold on the John day area there's plenty of fishing opportunities near the mouth of the Columbia that would be plenty fishable assuming wind isn't too bad. Also on the main stem of the Columbia there's great bass fishing just upstream of the John day dam on both sides of the river. There's some pretty killer rock piles that hold up a lot of fish.
