Went out to Westport this weekend to meet up with some fellow kayakers and found some really nice rockfish and even a few lings up to 10 lbs. I was practicing cpr (catch photo release) and had a great Saturday on the water. I even saw some other kayaks out there.
Sunday, I drove north until I saw water again and stopped at some random beach where I launched.  The fish were stacked and spent the better part of the day catching different species and watching them swim away.  I was joined later on by another kayaker and we had a blast dropping on piles of fish. Big swimbaits were working and so were small jigs. I even caught a fish on a red piece of yarn, lol.
If anybody want to go let me know, I am free most weekends.

Nice fish.

Close!  Definitely NOT a sanddab....dabs are left-eyed, this flat fish is right-eyed. Past that....I dont have a guess, not having it in hand and looking at lateral line arch, gill rakers, etc.  Love the mixed bag!!

I thought it was a type of sole. Looks like some more homework to find out what it is.

I’m 100% positive it’s a fish! Looked like a beautiful day on the water for sure, nice photos.

Thanks!
I looked up the types of fish it might be and the size of these fish is really small, but the state records are even smaller. I will will trying for a flatfish state record this season since nobody really fishes for them.
Anybody want a state record? This is the category that is wide open!

The first one - the tail - looks like a Red Irish Lord to me. If it's a cabezon it's a young one. Thanks for the pix!

Nice variety!  First fish is definitely a red Irish Lord: the rows of scales just below the dorsal fin are the giveaway.  Cabezon do not have scales.

Flatfish is some kind of sole...probably a rock sole, based on the mouth configuration and catch location.  I've seen rock sole exceeding 18 inches, so you've got a ways to go to get a record  :D.

I knew I missed out on good fishing weather that weekend every time I stepped outside stuck at work! I've driven north a few times scoping for decent launches but haven't found much south of the tribal beaches to the north jetty at Ocean Shores. Just slow sloping beach with heavy breakers for the 1st 200 yards. I'm heading down again this weekend for some razor clams but I plan to take another drive up the coast at least to Ruby Beach and see what I can find. Great catches!
They might sound ill advised, but when I tell folks of my exploits, it's rare I don't find them smiling

I’m trying to get a few days out there myself. My plan is to camp out at the quinalt tribe’s campground by the Ocean Shores marina and fish the submerged jetty along there...

I'm a numbers guy, okay? Came down early for the big Rohnert Park meeting - schoolies are in and gonna try to whack a halibut or two tomorrow.
