Homer Spit - 4/10

Hi everyone,

I'm happy to report that I finally got the skunk out of my new Outback! I went out on Wednesday 4/10 and fished Rudy's route in Homer, this was my second time fishing from the kayak. I caught four small Halibut (nothing worth keeping) and three fairly large Sculpin. The GoPro died an hour in so I only managed to record the first catch but I'll post the link below.

I started out with 12/0 circle hooks on a spreader bar with a big squid. You'll see in the video the first sculpin isn't even hooked, he just rode that bait all the way up and let go once I had him in the net. Rudy mentioned during his presentation last weekend that this exact scenario would happen but I just had to learn the lesson myself I guess. I landed one more sculpin with the circle hooks (same outcome, didn't even hook him) before moving over to a double 6/0 Gamakatsu rig with some herring. Next time I'll be better equiped!


Finally, I know I shouldn't have used the net. Since this was my first fish I was really only interested in my safety since I'm still
 learning the mechanics of landing a fish from the kayak, if one or two slimey sculpin have to die for that to happen then so be it. I was also hesitant about getting one of those things on my lap, they have some nasty barbs!

Lucky guy. Kayak fishing in SE Alaska is on my bucket list, even though I enjoy it quite often in the State of Jefferson.
