So all those folks in the thousands of aircraft flying at this exact moment in time are all headed home?
Yeah, I'll buy that for a dollar.
Tell me just exactly what it means "to the maximum extent possible"?
Liquor stores are open essential business, marijuana stores are open essential business. Nursery's are open, God knows Karen needs her petunias, essential business.
With a little rain and a sprinkling of Corona, tin pot dictators spring up like mushrooms.
5 folks in the ICU with COVID-19 in the Corvallis/Albany area.
FIVE.
1918, 102 years ago.
In that time we've conquered polio, almost eradicated smallpox, and landed men on the moon.
Maybe, just maybe modern medicine has advanced as well.
Please don't play the 1918 card, it just isn't relevant.

I can shed a little light on the airline side of things since I work for the hometown airline.  Most of my flights have been cancelled, but what I do operate is crazy empty.   Seattle to Boston....12 passengers, Boston to San Diego 14 passengers, San Diego back to  Seattle was like 25 passengers, but only 6 were actually passengers.  The rest were crew catching a ride home to Seattle after their regular flight cancelled.  Those loads are light enough for everyone to have their own row with an empty row ahead and behind.  The airports are so empty, it's way easier to social distance there than the grocery store.  Most of what we are carrying now is cargo with some doctors, nurses and such.  There are almost no business people, almost no tourists.

Karen isn't driving 50-100 miles to pick up her petunias, passing by all her local nurseries to pick up the "special" petunias from the faraway location. Carry that analogy over to anglers, and how the optics may look from a bureaucrat's eyes: why is the angler driving past all these rivers and lakes where they can fish, and heading to the coast instead? Do you think they'll look at that as "essential" travel, when the angler cruises right on by all these local options to wet a line?

The weekend before the governor issued the EO for Stay At Home, there was a "voluntary" request for people to limit travel. What happened? Entire coast was flooded with tourists from who-knows-where, boat ramps were crowded, beaches were packed, etc. The very next Monday, the EO was issued and the governor's office specifically brought up the coast-crowding situation as the catalyst. Do you think they'll simply turn a blind eye if they realize a bunch of people are traveling long distances to go fishing?

How much do we want to push the envelope on this? I'd prefer that fishing remains open for the duration of this thing, instead of having it shut down and us having to fight to get to fish again.

fine, you want to ignore statistics and science go ahead.  pandemic response is a known thing, and it is backed up by analyzing the data from previous pandemic events, like the 1918 influenza pandemic.

the best approach, especially if the virus requires special medical equipment that is in finite supply, is to socially distance, flatten the curve, and hope/work like crazy for a bayesian event to change the most likely outcome of the current statistical models.   we need to get R0 down to less than 1, an effective vaccine is the most likely 'game changer' from modern medicine but experts in that field predict it is 12 to 18 months out.

Tinker,
Not looking for a fight, but the image attached shows your argument to be false.

I don't fight.  I do, however, recognize false equivalencies, and numbers of airline flights at any given time is a false equivalency.

Personally, I wish Oregon hadn't declared marijuana dispensaries as essential businesses.  I understand the reasoning, but my Granddaghter manages six of them, spread hither and yon around Oregon, and I'd just as soon she stayed home.

See, we agree on something!

I don't feel near as lazy for not getting my fishing license in January like I usually do. For some reason this year I hesitated and never got around to getting mine.   :-\

I waited until February... now I wish I'd waited longer.

Casey, it seems to me you've been unhappy because you still have to work while most folks are home.  The whole "I can go fishing anywhere I damn well please" idea is what will lead ODFW to ban all recreational fishing.  This is first hand from a district manager: "[We'll] only be allowed to continue fishing as long as [we] follow the 'essential LOCAL travel' guidelines" (emphasis added).

We may not like staying near home to fish, but they can take that away, too.
I’m not unhappy to be working. It’s a pleasure to be apart of keeping the wheel rolling. It’s irritating that we are expected to go work (wherever the work is) while at the same time being told to stay home and fish their farm raised trout, F that. If you want to bow down to our government and ODFW go ahead neck it down

C’mon man. I don’t see the benefit of flouting the government on this. What do we “win” if we rally all anglers to defy the EO and travel across the state to go fishing? Is the government going to just give up and cede to our populist uprising? No. They’ll just shut it all down like they did in Washington. Is that what you want? If you can’t travel to fish, then nobody should fish period? Really?

Do what you want. If you travel to fish, I wish you success. But the flippant attitude toward the EO being posted on a public forum isn’t doing the kayak angler community any favors.

Point taken. My intent is never to rally anyone. I’m just saying that I don’t agree with this and that just because someone else dose, it  doesn’t mean that they should echo everything that is being played on their TV.
Honestly, I really wish I wouldn’t have engaged on this feed. We are never going to fully agree on this topic anyways.

Seaside PD already dropped the hammer for any razor clamming this week.  https://katu.com/news/local/seaside-pd-reminds-oregonians-that-the-beach-is-closed
"A venturesome minority will always be eager to get off on their own,
and no obstacle should be placed in their path;
let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sun burnt, stranded, drowned,
eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches -
that is the right and privilege of any free American."
