Hello! My name is Stephen and I am a student in Northgate, Seattle. I grew up fishing in North Idaho but have never gone here in the Seattle area. I am new to kayak angling and am excited to get out on the water. I am looking for buddies to get started. I typically go for trout or bass, but I want to expand on those and go for prize PNW fish. I want to find a buddy or two to go out to Lake Union, Lake Washington, the sound, wherever! HMU!

Hey, I'll be fishing Shilshole this summer and fall -- I think that's pretty close to Northgate. This summer/fall will be my second season hitting that area. So far I've only trolled for Salmon, but I had decent success last year.

Do you have a lifejacket? Assuming you have the minimum safety equipment I'd be happy to show you how I do things.

I’m game. We should find a day to head out soon. Maybe a weekend morning?

Sounds good. I try to get on the water between 5-5:30, but it should be pretty easy to find me if you launch later. I'm booked for the next couple of weekends but will reach out once able to hit Shilshole.

Attached is a picture of my general trolling setup: 6-16 OZ weight attached to the mainline via a dropper & slider, a bead or two to protect my knots, snap swivel, bead chain, ~24" of ~40lb line, flasher, 30-40" of 20-40lb fluoro leader (poundage dependent on my lure choice), pictured is a coho killer.

I've only targeted coho with this setup; generally I try to maintain 3-4 mph over ground.

If you have a fish finder or otherwise know how deep the fish are, you can create a charts w/ speed on one axis and amount of line out on the other axis using this calculator, to better target certain depths:

I think I created one for 6, 10, and 14 ounces last year. Given the currents & flasher, I think the numbers are at best a loose approximation of how deep your gear will be.

There are a lot of folks on this forum who have a lot more experience than me. Those folks have created some older posts that are pretty helpful.
